About the Name
“I like it. . .what does it mean?”
Porches are public spaces between the home and the neighborhood. People used to sit on their porches and talk with neighbors, family, and the occasional passerby. Porches are places of engagement, connecting, and belonging.
It’s easy for the church to forget about the porch and move inside, or to the back yard, forgetting about the neighbors and those who may not come inside, but would sit and talk for a while if given the invitation. We have lived our “church” lives behind walls and stained glass for far too long.
As we look to Christ as our prime example of living we see Him with people, touching, healing, challenging, and loving them. More often than not these people were the marginalized, the forgotten, the outsiders. Jesus became one of us, identifying with the complexity of our lives.
Coffee shops, pubs, and other places people gather have become the porches of today. We believe we are called to live our lives in these connecting spaces.
We hope many will have the opportunity to find God and new community with The Porch.
